Italy’s Best Wines – Gambero Rosso’s 2022 Tre Bicchieri award-winning Wines

The Annual Selection Process

Gambero Rosso recently released the results of its annual review and selection of the best Italian wines released this year which Gambero Rosso mysteriously and confusingly includes in the forthcoming year, 2022.

I don’t know how Gambero Rosso managed to pull off such a feat in this difficult period. The year started off pretty well with release of miraculous vaccines that offered the hope of a quick end to the pandemic and a return to normalcy. Unfortunately, those hopes were quashed when the vaccine movement stalled and the Delta variant led to a deadlier third wave of infections precipitating new mask mandates and renewed Covid-19 restrictions.

But Gambero Rosso persevered with its annual wine review and with typical Italian efficiency and attention to detail did it on schedule no less. So, they’re to be complimented for this achievement which I'm sure was a labor of love fueled by Italian grit and determination.

Gambero Rosso typically follows a well-organized and thorough review and selection process whereby over 60 wine experts review wines from each of Italy’s 20 regions as well as wines from Switzerland’s Italian-speaking Canton of Ticino. Teams of credentialed wine tasters evaluate thousands of wines across the depth and breadth of Italy, awarding each wine a score ranging from 1 to 3 Glasses according to their assessments of the quality of the wine.

The review and rating process starts in the early spring with wines reviewed by regional wine tasting panels and culminates in the release of the Tre Bicchieri (“three glasses”) recipients in stages by region from late September through early October.

While it is obviously an art and not a science, the Gambero Rosso organization endeavors to make the process as scientific as possible by providing a consistent, rigorous and impartial framework for evaluating wines. At each stage of the process the wines are tasted blind and teams of different tasters are involved in the evaluation process.

It’s hard to play favorites and manipulate scores in a system like this. Each year the tasting panels manage to comb through thousands of wines and tease out some interesting if not compelling wines that might otherwise escape attention.

Notwithstanding the obvious complexities and risks involved in such an undertaking, wines awarded Tre Bicchieri status are generally recognized in Glass of white wine with cheese and fruit.Italy and the international wine community as Italy’s best. A Tre Bicchieri award is a really big deal for a winery and a cause for celebration in that it validates the winemaker’s craftsmanship and the winery can bask in the reflected glory of that adulation.

The comprehensive wine ratings are subsequently published in Gambero Rosso’s annual guide Vini d’Italia (“Italian Wines”) which is released for sale in late October. The 2022 Vini d’Italia is the 35th edition of this classic guide and it’s a no-nonsense, fact-filled reference guide to the world of Italy’s best wines. Each entry provides useful information about the winery, including a description of its most important labels and product prices in Italian wine shops. Several translations of Vini d’Italia are published, including German, Japanese, Chinese and English language editions.

Since its initial release in 1988 this Guide has become the gold standard for wine professionals and enthusiastic amateurs alike around the world looking for impartial reviews across Italy’s expansive wine scene.

When it comes to wine, Italy just keeps getting better and better. This year, 488 wines received Tre Bicchieri awards, an increase of 12 awards from the previous year.

As in previous years, there is considerable regional disparity in the distribution of Tre Bicchieri awards. Four regions – Lombardia, Piedmont, Tuscany and Veneto - collectively garnered 241 awards, almost half of the total number.

Wines from Tuscany received the largest number of awards, 94, or almost 1 out of every 5 awards. This achievement was bolstered by a string of very good to excellent vintages that include the outstanding 2015 and 2016 vintages and the not-too-shabby 2017 and 2018 vintages.

The lions’ share of Tuscany’s Tre Bicchieri awards went to Chianti Classico wines, with 23 wines receiving awards, the vast majority of which were from the praiseworthy 2018 and 2019 vintages.  Included in Chianti Classico’s trophy list of wines is 8 Riserva – all from the 2018 vintage - and 7 Gran Selezione wines, a relatively new quality category implemented in 2014 to denote Chianti Classico DOCG wines of superior quality.

There are only two Chianti award-winning wines not from the Chianti Classico appellation, one a Chianti Colli Fiorentini and the other a Chianti Rufina, both from the 2018 vintage.

Nineteen Brunello wines received awards, one more than the previous year. While the majority of award-winning Brunello wines are from the excellent 2016 vintage, the 2015 vintage is also well represented with a number of Riserva wines.

But other Tuscan wine appellations also rose to the occasion and produced award-winning wines. For example, 5 Nobile di Montepulciano wines from southern Tuscany received awards, 1 more than the year previous.
Seven wines from the Bolgheri appellation also received awards and 2 from Maremma, which borders Bolgheri on Tuscany’s western coastline, also received awards.

There are also a number of Super-Tuscans included in Tuscany’s list of award-winning wines, many of which are serial recipients with marquee names such as the acclaimed Cepparello from Isole e Olena, the Paleo Rosso from Macchiole and Solaia from the Antinori estate, to name a few.

While Tuscany is primarily a red wine region, a few white wines - including 3 Vernaccia di San Gimignano wines - also made the list.

Piedmont, another Italian wine powerhouse region, comes in second with 72 Tre Bicchieri awards, or 14.8 percent of the total awards, but with 3 less than the previous year.

Piedmont’s vaunted reputation is based primarily on the Nebbiolo variety and 43 Nebbiolo-based wines received awards that collectively account for 60 percent of total Piedmont awards. The Nebbiolo-based wines include 27 Barolo, 9 Barbaresco, 4 from the Lessona, Ghemme, Boca and Gattinara appellations in northern Piedmont and 3 from the Roero appellation.

As in previous years, Barolo wines garnered the largest share of Piedmont’s Tre Bicchieri awards with 27 wines or approximately a third of Piedmont’s total. Of these, the vast majority (16) are from the highly-regarded 2017 vintage while others are from the excellent 2015 and 2016 vintages.

Nine Barbaresco wines received Tre Bicchieri awards, a gain of 1 from the previous year. The Barbaresco wines are from a variety of vintages ranging from 2013 through 2018 and includes 4 Riserva wines from the excellent 2015 and 2016 vintages.

Barbera, which traditionally plays second fiddle to Piedmont's more prestigious Nebbiolo variety, also did well with 8 Barbera wines garnering awards. This includes 4 Barbera d’Asti, 2 Monferrato Superiore and 2 from the Nizza DOCG zone that only a few years ago was a sub-zone of the Barbera d’Asti DOCG.

While Piedmont is best known for its red wines its white wines have received increased attention in recent years as documented by the 3 Gavi, 2 Moscato d’Asti, 3 Arneis, 2 Timorasso and an Erbaluce di Caluso, all of which received Tre Bicchieri awards. Also, 3 white sparkling wines, 2 of which are from the up-and-coming Alta Langhe area, received awards.

The Veneto region collected 45 Tre Bicchieri awards, 1 more than the year previous, for the third-highest regional total. Amarone is the most prestigious and well-known wine produced in the Veneto region and it figures prominently with 13 Tre Bicchieri awards that collectively account for 29 percent of total Veneto awards. While the award-winning Amarone wines are spread over a variety of vintages ranging from 2010 through 2017, 4 each are from the excellent 2013 vintage and the very good 2017 vintage.

Three Valpolicella Superiore wines received awards, the same number as the year previous, and a 2013 Recioto della Valpolicella Classico, a sweet red wine made from dried (passito) grapes, also received an award.

Merlot is one of the most widely planted red varieties in the Veneto region and the region has Italy’s largest plantings of the variety. Two Merlot-based wines (the 2017 Campo Sella from the Sutto winery and the Merlot Casa del Merlo from the Filò delle Vigne winery) received awards. Merlot is also used as a blending variety for two award-winning Bordeaux-type wines from the Montello e Colli Asolani DOC in northeastern Veneto.

While Veneto’s red wines probably receive more attention, Veneto’s grape varieties are almost equally divided between white and red and a number of white wines received awards. For example, 4 Soave wines from the historic Classico appellation received Tre Bicchieri awards. This doesn’t include Anselmi’s award-winning flagship, single-vineyard Capitel Croce, a Gargenaga wine that qualifies for the Soave designation but which Anselmi decided to forego and instead name after the vineyard from which the grapes are sourced.

Three wines made from a blend of white varieties in the Custoza DOC received awards as did 2 Trebbiano-based wines from the Lugana DOC at the southern end of Lake Garda also received awards.

Sparkling wines comprise a big component of Veneto’s award total. The Conegliano-Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG zone is based on the white Glera grape previously known as Prosecco. The zone is one of Italy’s most important quality sparkling wine districts and 6 sparkling wines from the Conegliano-Valdobbiadene appellation and 1 from Cartizze, the appellation’s only official sub-zone, received awards. Another sparkling wine made in the classic method in the Lessini Durello DOC that lies east of Lake Garda in the foothills of the Alps also received a Tre Bicchieri award.

Overall, there aren’t any significant year-over-year variations in awards between regions. Eight regions experienced no change in award totals from the previous year, 9 regions had increases while only 5 had declines in number of awards.

The Alto Adige region in northern Italy had the largest increase in number of awards in both absolute and percentage terms – a gain of 4 awards for a 21.1 percent increase. This gain is due primarily to an increased number of Gewurztraminer and Pinot Grigio wines that received awards.

Tuscany also received 4 more awards than the previous year but a more modest percentage gain of 4.4 percent. The increase in number of awards is primarily attributable to an increased number of awards to Super-Tuscan wines such as the 2018 Valdisanti, a Cabernet Sauvignon blend from the Tolaini winery; the 2018 Uno Toscana IGT, a pure Sangiovese from Tenuta Carleone; and the 2018 Teuto Toscana IGT, a Sangiovese blend from Tenuta Podernovo.

The largest loss in number of awards was experienced by the Campania and Piedmont regions with both receiving 3 fewer awards than in the year previous. Basilicata, Liguria and Sardinia all had 1 less award than the year previous.

As in previous years, wines from Ticino are eligible for Tre Bicchieri status which is interesting in that Ticino is a canton in neighboring Switzerland. This peninsula-shaped, southern-most Swiss canton is bordered by Italy on three sides so there is a very strong Italian connection and the culture here is decidedly Italian. Italian is the official language and you'll hear it spoken almost everywhere in Ticino. The climate is also noticeably milder and enjoys a higher number of days of sunshine than the rest of Switzerland, both important considerations for viticulture.

Merlot is a popular variety here and 2 Ticino wines received Tre Bicchieri awards, one made entirely of Merlot and the other an elegant Bordeaux-style blend with some Merlot.

So, there you have it. Of all the Italian wines released in the current year, 488 have been anointed by Gambero Rosso as Italy’s best. Regardless of whether you believe wine scores or follow recommendations of wine savants I’m confident that any wine listed below will pass muster with even the most discriminating taster and most likely will be among the best wines you’ll taste this year or in the near future. I’ve already tasted some and I look forward to sampling others from the list.

Again, a tip of my hat to Gambero Rosso for pulling off this remarkable wine-tasting marathon during a difficult period of renewed Covid restrictions and social distancing.
